Guidelines Issued for Managing Hospital Medicine Groups

Assessment guide comprises 10 principles and 47 characteristics for effective HMG management

TUESDAY, Feb. 11, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- A new assessment guide comprising 10 principles has been developed for effective management of hospital medicine groups (HMGs), according to research published in the February issue of the Journal of Hospital Medicine.

Patrick Cawley, M.D., from the University of South Carolina in Charleston, and colleagues developed guidelines for effective HMG management. The workgroup developed an initial draft of characteristics, which was reviewed extensively. Comments and feedback were provided by a broad group of stakeholders in hospital medicine and the health care industry over an 18-month period.

The researchers developed a final framework which included 47 key characteristics organized under 10 principles. These principles of an effective HMG included effective leadership; engaged hospitalists; adequate resources; effective planning and management infrastructure; and alignment with the hospital and/or health system. An effective HMG should also support care coordination across care settings; play a leadership role in addressing key clinical issues; take a rational approach to its scope of clinical activities; implement a patient- and family-centered team-based practice model, which emphasizes communication and care coordination; and recruit and retain qualified clinicians.

"These principles and characteristics provide a framework for HMGs seeking to conduct self-assessments, outlining a pathway for improvement and better defining the central role of hospitalists in coordinating team-based, patient-centered care in the acute-care setting," the authors write.

Several authors disclosed providing consulting to hospital medicine groups.
