Blake Medical Centers Stroke Program is certified Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission. This certification means our program complies with the highest national standards for safety and quality care in the rapid-response and treatment of acute stroke patients.
Time Lost is Brain Lost
If treatment is started within the first three hours of stroke symptoms, an improved outcome for the patient is possible. When treatment is delayed, the consequences can mean an increased risk of disability or death.
Patients having an ischemic stroke may be eligible to receive a clot-busting drug called t-PA. Patients must be within 3 hours of the onset of symptoms and meet other strict eligibility requirements to receive t-PA.
Identifying a Stroke Quickly
When stroke is suspected a fast diagnosis of both the presence and type of stroke is critical. A computed tomography (CT) scan is used to identify or rule out a hemorrhagic stroke. This helps determine whether the patient is eligible for the clot-busting drug, t-PA. It also enables physicians to determine the extent of damage to the brain.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
EMS provides pre-hospital assessment and treatment. Our partnership with Manatee Emergency Services allows advanced notification to the hospital when EMS arrives at the patient's location.
Rapid Response Stroke Team
Once notified of a possible stroke victim, a special Code 3 is called which activates our specially trained Rapid Response Stroke Team starts working to clear diagnostic equipment in preparation for the patient leading to faster diagnosis and better outcomes.
