Eating Out in Manatee County Just Got Healthier

Bradenton, Florida—(January 25th, 2011) Blake Medical Center & the Manatee County Health Department have teamed up to bring you ‘Healthy Choices’ when dining out.   Some of the area’s best restaurants will soon offer new healthier menu items, created with Registered Dietitians and labeled with total calories, fat, and sodium.  On Thursday, January 27th, 2011 from 5:00pm – 8:00pm the public is invited to attend a FREE sampling of these ’Healthy Choices‘paired with local organic wines.  This free event will be held at the South Florida Museum located at 201 10th Street West, Bradenton, FL 34205.  Entertainment for the evening will be provided by the Manatee High School Jazz ensemble.  For information, or to RSVP, call 1-888-359-3552.

Manatee County is first in Florida to implement this type of program.  Participating restaurants worked with Registered Dietitians at Blake Medical Center to create meals considered healthy for the average person.  The new offerings will be labeled to show calorie intake, total fat and sodium. You can find participating restaurants at www.BlakeMedicalCenter.com/HealthyChoices, or just look for the Healthy Choices emblem on windows, tables, and menus at your favorite restaurants around town.

This program is part of the ACHIEVE initiative.  ACHIEVE is a three year grant that the Manatee County Health Dept. was awarded by NACCHO (the National Association of County and City Health Officials) in collaboration with the CDC (the Center for Disease Control).  The hope is that through this program we help fight obesity, especially childhood obesity.  The 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) indicated that an estimated 17 percent of children and adolescents ages 2-19 years are obese. The “HEALTHY CHOICES” imitative ties into ACHIEVE’s nutrition focus by providing healthy options at restaurants in our community and creating easy access to healthy choices.
